DVD’s, also known as digital versatile discs or digital video discs, are a popular media storage design. DVD’s can be used to store videos as well as data. DVD discs are the same size as a compact disc, but can hold six times the amount of information that a CD can. There are different variations to DVD’s which include; DVD-ROM, where data can only be read and not written to them, DVD-R, can be written on once, and then used as a DVD-ROM, and DVD-RW, that can hold data, be erased and re-written on for a number of times. DVD’s first began being researched in 1993. Initially, there were two different projects being undertaken by groups of multimedia companies, however, they united on one singular effort to make a single standardized disc, in an attempt to keep their costs as low as possible.
Recently, some entrepreneurs have begun to place DVD movie kiosks or vending machines in busy public places such as outside of Wal Marts and McDonalds. They have gained much popularity due to the tremendous convenience that they provide to the customer. Most do not attach a late fee to the rental, like many video stores do. The DVD vending market is reaching a stage of significant growth, and offers a comparable convenience to traditional movie stores, without the wait.
