Did You Know?
A jukebox is a partially automated music-playing device, usually a coin-operated machine that can play specially selected songs from media within it. The phrase "jukebox" was first used in the United States in the 1930s. Many believe it came from the African-American slang "jook" meaning "dance." Another thought was that critics who believed it would promote criminal behavior gave it that name. The true beginnings of the jukebox were in the early 1900s when a coin mechanism was added to the phonograph. However, the modern jukebox came about in the early 1930s when inventors finally figured out how to perfect the selection mechanism that allowed listeners to select the record they wanted to hear. The 1930s jukeboxes played 10, 12, or 16 records, were in a wooden case and a flat top. In the late 1930s, remote selectors were added. Over time jukeboxes became more decorated, using colored lights, chrome, bubble tubes, ceiling lamps, and other visual devices. Many consider the 1940s to be the "golden age" of jukebox styling. Technology kept improving, and by the ‘40s, jukeboxes could play 24 records, contained. Today, these jukeboxes are highly desirable with collectors and are relatively expensive. Starting in the ‘80s, compact discs (CD’s) replaced the vinyl of the past. Today there are completely digital jukeboxes which don’t use CD’s at all. Music is downloaded over the internet. This gives the capability for jukeboxes to store an unimaginable amount of music. Jukeboxes continue to be popular in bars and restaurants alike. They give off a retro feel often associated with early rock and roll music. No matter where a jukebox is placed, they are nostalgic, and will always be optically and acoustically eye-catching.
